Health experts, dermatologists and beauty gurus will tell you that the most important (but often overlooked) part of your skincare routine is applying sunscreen.
But finding one that you – and your skin – like can be difficult. Not to mention which one won’t look too shiny under makeup. Do you go for cheap and cheerful, or is it better to bet on a more expensive, trendy brand?
Well, we’d say a pretty safe option is to go for a sunscreen that’s both affordable (as you’re more likely to use it liberally) and has a string of rave reviews.
A sunscreen, for example, like La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50 which is down to £14.40 (from £18) now at Boots.
FYI: In March, the brand launched a new update to the formula of its best-selling sunscreen (hence the name change slightly), which it claims improves the level of protection even more.
In a nutshell, the brand has developed a new filter – Mexoryl 400. This protects the skin from the most harmful, long UVA rays that are associated with signs of premature aging. In addition, it also protects against shorter UVA rays, along with UVB rays (aka those responsible for burning).
Make La Roche-Posay’s Face Sunscreen an even easier basket addition when you’re looking for your usual skincare and beauty essentials.
Why we consider it:
The gorgeous, lightweight product is part of La Roche-Posay’s best-selling Anthelios range, launched over two decades ago.
It’s a range made for all types of sensitive skin, whether acne-prone or dry, while offering extremely broad-spectrum sun protection. It also protects your skin from pigmentation.
All, crucially, this cult-favorite facial sunscreen is non-comedogenic (so it won’t clog your pores or give you breakouts) and paraben and fragrance-free, too.
Please note that the formula is quite watery, so you will need to shake the bottle well before application. But it sinks in and dries quickly so it’s easy to apply after moisturizer and before foundation. And doesn’t leave you with shiny, oily skin.

There is no white residue, it does not irritate the eyes and customers report that it does not aggravate sensitive skin or rosacea.
And the non-comedogenic claims are really true – tons of reviews say this is the only sunscreen that doesn’t aggravate their skin.
What the reviews say:
With many comments highlighting that it doesn’t leave a white cast on darker and darker skin tones, rave reviews about its light, non-greasy texture, its effectiveness in protecting the skin, and the fact that it does not cause any skin problems, this new formulation of La Roche-Posay’s iconic sunscreen also wins serious fans. One woman even said her doctor recommended she use it.
“Girl friendly sunscreen with tan skin. Love this sunscreen. Great on dark skin with no white cast. I like the size of the bottle, it may look small but it lasts forever, just remember to shake before use.”
“Love this. Recommended by accident to me and the best ever. Worth every penny and even though it’s a small tub lasts for months. Absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a thick layer or sticky residue like regular sunscreen.”
“Love love this sunscreen. Absolute perfection – high coverage and so silky and light on the skin. This sunscreen absorbs well and is not sticky and very comfortable to wear. I really cannot fault this product.”
“Holy grail! This is without a doubt my sunscreen of choice every year! Now I was sent the new version ‘Uvmune 400’ to try and I’m not sure exactly what the differences are. I feel like the texture has become even smoother It wears so good under make-up and on its own! Perfect to touch up with LRP Anthelios Spray during the day.
