Doja Cat has shaved her head and eyebrows and has been honest about the happiness she feels about the decision to make the change and how “rich and beautiful” she is, following fans’ concerns for her.
The singer (26), whose real name is Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, debuted her hair transformation on Instagram Live on Thursday. She told fans that she decided to shave off her hair because she felt she was “never going to have hair anyway.”
“I don’t like having hair. I never liked having hair. I can’t tell you once, since the beginning of my life, that I’ve ever been like, “This is cool,” Doja Cat told her followers live during an Instagram Live, which has since been shared on Twitter. “I just don’t like having hair.”
The rapper’s decision to shave her head also stemmed from her frustration with wigs. She noted that she used to exercise in the pieces of hair, which then “started to slip and flake off my head”.
“I was going to work out, but I couldn’t focus because I was more concerned with how I looked and how my hair felt and how I could keep it attached to my scalp,” she continued, adding that she can’t believe it. it took her that long to “be like ‘shave your head'”.
Doja Cat also admitted that she rarely wore her hair natural and that when she did it was a “freaking nightmare”.
“You’ve seen me wearing my natural hair. I had, like, two eras where my hair would be out. I wanted to straighten it … There was a moment where it was natural and I don’t even wear it natural because I don’t feel like it and it’s just a terrifying nightmare, dude,” she said.
The 26-year-old then shared her happiness at the decision, revealing she has “never felt so damn happy”.
“I really like this … I’ve never felt so damn happy … It’s really funny how much of an effect taking the hair off my head has positively affected me,” she continued.
While speaking directly to her fans and followers, the “Woman” singer also acknowledged all the things she would be able to do now that she no longer has to worry about her hair, like swimming, surfing and working out. Another benefit of her new hairstyle is that it will allow wigs to “lay flatter if I ever want to wear a wig”.
“This is just better, it’s much better,” she added.
After debuting her new hairstyle, Doja Cat decided to take her hair removal a step further, and the rapper proceeded to use a razor, shaving cream and a handheld mirror to shave off her eyebrows on Instagram Live.
While she seemed happy with the results, she noted at one point that her makeup artist had texted her to let her know they were on their way over after realizing what the rapper was up to.
On social media, Doja Cat’s fans supported her new look, with many applauding the singer for embracing a hairstyle she’s comfortable with.
“I actually love bald Doja Cat,” one person tweeted, while another said: “I have a complex relationship with my hair and this is refreshing. She looks gorgeous regardless and I hope she continues to do what she than want to do with the hair.”
“Good for her! [There’s] something powerful about breaking free from the norm when it comes to hair. Whether it’s rocking the natural or shaving it off. I know it’s like a weight off her shoulders,” wrote another.
In a later Instagram Live sessionDoja Cat talked about how “great” she feels after shaving her head, before acknowledging how much she “hates it” that fans contact her to see if she’s “okay”.
“I’m rich, I’m fine,” she said. “Just the whole ‘Are you OK, Queen?’ s*** makes me want to rip myself off… I guess the hair that I left out and that would be my genitalia. It makes me want to rip out my pubic hair, I absolutely hate it.”
