The Dutch pilot of Red Bull, champion of the world and leader iridato, triumphed with an extraordinary ride and with a perfect tactic suggested by the box: from the tenth position in the starting grid to the highest step of the podium. Verstappen went ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, took pole position. Delusione Ferrari: Carlos Sainz was in fourth position, Charles Leclerc – zavorrato da una strategia discutibile – è sesto all spalle della Red Bull di Sergio Perez.

Russell turns on his feet in 1’24” and after 10 of the 70 turns in the program he has more than 2” in margine su Sainz. Leclerc insege a circa 4”. All major parts of Mercedes by Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull in Verstappen.

Con gomme più fresh, Leclerc is approaching the leader and in the 28th tornata va all’attacco alla curva 2: Russell resists and conserves the first position. Leclerc ci riprova nel 31esimo giro e stavolta la Mercedes deve cedere strada.
The Ferrari strategy stipulates that Leclerc, in the second pit-stop in the 40th tornata, will mount the white rubber, with the harder compound. Una scelta discutibile del muretto, l’ennesima in una stagione che si complica nacionale.
The Monegasque, with tires still in use, can’t resist the Red Bull di Verstappen, who, however, is in a clamorous head-to-head, ceding the Cavallino position again. Verstappen restarted to beat the Ferrari in the 45th lap. At the front, in the soste tourbillon, Sainz’s red face is waiting for the second step in the box. Hamilton reenters per l’ultimo cambio gomme and Verstappen, nella 52esima tournata, si prende la prima posizione. Poco dopo, Leclerc ceded Strada to Russell, che sale al secondo posto. La gomma dura si rivela disastrosa, il monegasco viene rimiamato ai box per il terzo pit-stop: addio podio. Verstappen marcia spedito verso la vittoria – e verso il secondo titolo mondiale – while le Mercedes si predono il podio. La raino nell’ultimo giro non cambia nulla: la Ferrari stecca, di nuovo, e il Cavallino rimane giù dal podio.
